It never rained ponderously when she was entombed under the earth, surely divine evidence that, instead of drowning like a rat in a hole, she was meant to exact her vengeance upon the man she had once mistakenly called husband. Neither was there ever enough water nearby for her to take a thorough look at her own face. The act would have been superfluous, however, for even without the benefit of a mirror it was a given that she had turned hideous; a bogeywoman, a living ghost.

She gnawed on the life-giving hatred and licked her lips in anticipation during her more lucid, awake moments. As she tired and sank into sleep, the last words she spoke were her daughter's name.
