The power was only part of it. He had been a lonely child, studying magic in a lonely cottage in an isolated field. No matter how beautiful it had been, there had been no one to talk to. All he had had were his studies and the distant stars.
Then the stars had fallen.
His first impulse was pity. The poor things were burning out to nothing in front of him. He had seen another one plummeting, and held out his hands to catch it. He was a child and wanted to help. The star was still dying, but it had offered him a deal. Power, in exchange for his heart. Servitude, in exchange for existence.
An adult would’ve weighed the consequences. A trained wizard would’ve known to bargain and haggle. The child in training only knew that the star would die without a heart, and that if he gave it his own, it would be bound to him as long as he lived. He wouldn’t be alone anymore. And with the star’s power he wouldn’t have to study so hard. It was everything he wanted, for a price he was willing to pay.
