He had spotted her when she was sitting on her haunches and peering down at her reflection on the glittering water, her upper body leaning so far forward she would have plunged right in but did not. He offered to teach her some stances, which would help improve that exceptional balance. "And they're good to discourage bad people with," he added.

She was too shy and well-groomed to question her elders and betters, but she was also a child. "Will it make me able to walk across water?"

He chortled indulgently. "Not at this stage, no. But you might be able to take better care of your father."

Beaming, she thanked him, and he waved a careless hand. A flowing current might take the rocks it had to wind past for granted, but he would welcome the contact, and the break in the routine.

A/N: I totally forgot whether Mu Nianci met Hong Qigong before or after she met Yang Tiexin. I'm assuming it's after.
