They were beautiful, her sisters, beautiful and fierce and somehow wilted at the edges; but that last part mattered little for they were strong, and strong was what they must be. They were in no need of men - men would not precipitate their blooming and draw out more of their beauty (whoever filled in their silly, easily swayed heads with such rubbish?). Instead, men would trample them down in the dust to leave them there, in a state more ghastly than death.

She listened solemnly, hesitating to take notes, and buried the image of petals - still lovely and suffused with flickering remnants of dignity - drifting in hollows filled with rainwater.
