"First things first," Yang Buhui said. "I am not my mother."

"No, of course you're not," Yin Liting assured her, sounding more gallant than he had expected. "You are yourself."

Yang Buhui paused, considering her reply. "What was she like when she was a girl?"

"She was - a very kind person, very well-mannered. All my brothers liked her and approved of our engagement. We were furious at your father for what he did to her, but not anymore."

"I wasn't raised to have perfectly good manners, and I'm not all that nice. If I don't like my servants, I can be mean to them. Especially when I believe they're a threat to the Ming Clan, as you've known yourself."

Earlier Yin Liting had wanted to point out that she was more her father's daughter; now he doubted that Yang Xiao, an expert of strategies and steadfast plans, would willingly display this level of candor to anyone he would like put to test. "And as I said, I've seen a lot of you when you took care of me. I loved your mother, but you are not her. I understand that, and I understand you."

"Splendid." A hint of either the morning's warmth or some unnamed emotion was tracing a faint blush across Yang Buhui's cheeks. "I'm glad that's settled."
