It’s hardly fair,” he purred. “That you should have such power.”

“What did you do to deserve it? How did you earn it? I gained my power through pain and suffering, blood and betrayal, bargains made and oaths taken and debts paid. All you did was outlive your father.

“And now, you sit here. Safe in a mansion. Under down duvets, in a silk gown. With everything money can buy. You can have anything you want. You could grind this island beneath your heel. You could use the whole of it as your castle and conquer outward. How long would it take for you to rule all the world? With me doing the hard parts? Not long. A year at the most.”

Her breathing caught and he thought she might wake up. He sat poised at the end of her bed, grinning at the thought of how her eyes would bulge if she opened them to find him watching her while she slept. Her hand might even fly to her throat to feel for bites. But her eyes stayed closed.

“Not because you yourself were special,” he went on. “You merely inherited me. You could be a slobbering dullard and as long as the Hellsing blood flowed in you, my bonds would hold me. How fortunate for us both, that you seem to be a worthy Master.”

He was silent for a moment, but she tossed restlessly. Her hair was flung out over the pillow and her throat was exposed. He watched the pulse quicken under her skin, then steady again. Her fingers clenched into fists, then relaxed.

“You could have anything,” he whispered. “Be anything. You could be immortal. You have that choice. And all it cost you was a little blood. But, oh, the blood that has been spilled in return… perhaps not by your hand, but by your will… Rivers of it. Oceans. Lives washed away because it suited you. Hardly fair at all.”

His chuckle was a low, throaty sound and his form started to melt into a blanket of shadow. The red of his coat faded out but his eyes still glowed.

“But time has a way of restoring the balance. You will have to pay your debts too, one day, and make your bargains, and pledge your vows. And I think that I shall be there to see it.”
