March 12th - Kingdom Hearts - Prompt 12

Title: n/a

Vexen’s gaze was slowly starting to darken as he lay stretched upon the quaint path. His eyes wandered on the sky, his breath rasping as his body started to disappear. Vexen did not know how long his life—no, how long his existence—would last from that moment. Each breath, a smoky black tendril of darkness would flow from his chest. The burning that resonated through his skin was almost unbearable.

The neophyte—the term he had taken and anointed each of the “other seven” with—stood over him. Chakrams were clutched tightly in his grip and watching with a feverishly pleased smile.

Axel had been his to watch over, and Roxas was Axel’s. Roxas’s escape shattered the relationship of scientist and neophyte.

Had Axel thought this way all along?

Axel’s smile stayed fixed on him, not letting him go. Vexen’s hand reached up toward the other, his eyes narrowing to the younger man.

Sora was a mere fixture—a trivial variable to the situation—on the scene; Vexen did not bother to acknowledge the boy’s presence. Why bother now? He did not need to see his face to know his condition, much like he did not need to know why he could no longer feel his legs: they had disappeared.

Nights of watching the neophyte sleep soundly. Vexen assured that sleep. He studied Axel like no other subject—and Axel seemed to comply. Sweet kisses always followed harsh needles, after all. Until Roxas had showed, Axel would perch himself on a stool and quietly watch the scientists meddle about their business within the Castle That Never Was. Roxas was no more than another Nobody—what had been so special about him?

“Bastard,” Vexen breathed out throatily, his eyes closing slowly as his arm lowered to his side, the dagger-like shard of ice melting onto the ground
