[February 3] [Azumanga Daioh] Even After the Fact

Title: Even After the Fact
Day/Theme: February 3 / the wicked daughter
Series: Azumanga Daioh
Character/Pairing: Sakaki, Chiyo-chichi, Chiyo
Rating: Slight PG

“Thank you for taking such good care of my daughter,” said the orange cat, his voice slightly muffled from the bright red tomato he was chewing.

“You’re… very welcome… Chiyo-chichi.” It was hard to admit, but Sakaki rather enjoyed the dreams in which she traveled to Chiyo’s house. Her father might have been intimidating at first, but on calm, quiet visits like these, he could be quite sane.

But then and again, that serenity could be easily disturbed, just as a tranquil pond’s surface could be upset with ripples from just one thrown pebble.

“She needs all the positive influence she can get; she’s a cruel child, you know.”

Or, in Chiyo-chichi’s case, one hurled boulder.

“She…” Sakaki stammered. She was sure her mouth was hanging open. “Chiyo-chan is—”

“I bet you’re wondering why I’m a cat,” Chiyo’s father went on. He’d since set down his tomato, and Sakaki noticed that a red aura had begun to pulse about him. “Well, when she was little, she thought it would be amusing to turn me into something…”

The cat started to shake.

“…and so being curious and childish and wicked…”

The aura got stronger.

“…she did this. She. Did. This.

Sakaki pinched herself in a desperate attempt to wake up.

“Please, sir,” she said, voice and hands a-tremble. “Eat your tomato. It’ll make you feel better.”

What makes you think that eating red things will make me better?

In the distance, an alarm rang.

Sakaki sat up in bed and rubbed the crimson speckling her vision away.

-

“Sakaki-san!” Chiyo waved at her from the front of her house.

Sakaki seized up noticeably.

“Hello… Chiyo-chan.”

“Sakaki-san, are you alright?”

“Just… fine. Here, let’s walk to school together.”

The walk was silent, save for a breeze fluttering the leaves in the trees and the sound of Chiyo humming.

“Um… Chiyo-chan…” Sakaki chose her words, swallowed, and spoke. “Your father… is he… what is your relationship with him?”

“My father?” Chiyo tilted her head in confusion, but beamed up at her friend. “My father loves me very much! He says that I’m a very sweet child.” Still smiling, she queried, “Why do you ask, Sakaki-san?”

Sakaki looked away. “No… reason. But that means the cat is lying to me.”

They both stood still.

“The… cat?”
