[February 2] [Original] Fifth Column part 2

Title: Fifth Column part 2

Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Original

The three prototype fighter ships rested quietly on the hangar deck, gleaming and unscathed, waiting for their final test runs before full flight clearance was given and mass production could commence. Hopes were high, riding on these machines to win the war that was going so very badly. New engines, new navigation systems, new short-range ftl technology, and most importantly, new guns. Auto-tracking triple-barrelled machine guns with explosive rounds requiring only authorisation to seek and destroy multiple targets at full spherical range. Beneath the smooth black-painted alloy, these seeds of destruction waited to grow into something beautiful and terrifying.

Branner stared at them. Three sleek beasts, just waiting to get out into the great black oblivion and blow a hell of a lot of things up. She’d flown one for the two initial flight tests, seen how it handled, felt the engine jump beneath and around her, and she knew, just knew, that he was right. These things were going to kill a lot of people. Not that she hadn’t done her fair share of that in her time. They weren’t her people but it still wasn’t right.

It was war, and she was so, so tired of it.

She clicked off the safety on her side-arm, aimed, and fired. Three shots in quick succession was all she needed. She knew that that was why he’d selected her, all those months ago, to pursue. Best crack shot in the fleet: her reputation would do her justice this time, too.

Fuel tanks were pierced and ignited, and the explosion knocked Branner off her feet back into the hangar door. Heat scorched her eyes and skin, pain ricocheting through her body from the fire and the impact, and just as quickly as it had started, it ended as she lost consciousness.
