[Nov. 6, 2006][Suikoden] Gray Aftermath
Title: Gray Aftermath
Day/Theme: Nov. 6, 2006 come with me, under my coat
Series: Suikoden
Character/Pairing: Sasarai and Dios
Rating: PG-13-ish
The site of the recent battle, drawn to a close only half an hour ago, still groaned and bled. Sasarai's heart sank as the stretcher bearers passed him for the hundredth time. The Harmonian forces had suffered a humiliating defeat, caused in part by something strange that had occurred back home. The reports coming in were not clear yet, but either His Holiness had struck up a deal with the republic, or the Hadasa-Orsini alliance had actually solidified and had made some sort of internal move. Neither event struck the bishop as very likely, but the word brought from Crystal Valley was still rather garbled. It had been enough to catch Sumi and the troops from the East-Central area off guard.
The gray skies finally erupted into a dreary rain, smacking his uniform and spattering mud on his boots. He seemed to have an unlucky tendency to only fight in conflicts that his country lost (the official position, of course, was not that they lost, but something more delicate). His long-ish bangs were pressed against his wet face and raindrops slid along his cheeks.
"Excuse me, Sir-" the voice of Captain Mikhail interrupted his somber thoughts. Sasarai turned to see the large-nosed soldier standing in the muck, a heavy, gray cloak shielding him from the rain. They had only been introduced just before this expedition into former Highland territory began, but Sasarai had already grown to like Dios' frank nature and intelligent strategy. Dios lifted his arm, "Come over here, Sir. Don't let yourself be soaked unneccessarily."
Smiling, Sasarai accepted the invitation and was somewhat surprised as Dios put his arm around his shoulders, enfolding him partially in the thick, gray fabric. The cloak had the smell of wet grass. "Thank you," he said. He appreciated the shelter, but he was still a bit embarrassed.
The pair watched quietly as the remaining wounded were carried away amidst the white and blue tents. "The last time I was in this area," Sasarai told his subordinate in a soft voice, "On the way back, my men were very good to me. I had been hurt and was concerned, but they comforted me. They were veterans and they told me I was like their sones. Now, today, I've probably killed their sons. And you're the only soldier left who likes me."
"Times change, Sir," Dios replied succinctly and tightened his grip of his superior's shoulders.
