Sasuke had been roaming since the age of eight. His entire life was a mission: the days plotted and scheduled down to the meticulous minute, the nights spent crouched glaring into the sullen fires of his goals that, according to some unexplainable paradox, raged higher, fiercer, the longer it burned without fuel.

It took years, years, and endless suffering on all sides, but eventually, the fire was extinguished in a swift moment. When Sasuke emerged from the ashes, he tried to remember how being victorious felt, but instead ended up confused as to why a mission success would feel so hollow.

He made his slow, trudging way back to the village of his birth, where he had first unrolled the mission scroll, in hope that triumph would find him there. But the hollowness grew and grew, and soon, all Sasuke could contemplate was the possibility of a new life, a new mission.

So he stood, hollow-cheeked and hollow-eyed, a gaunt shell on the shore poised to return to the waters of its lake. (It was the lake of his father, back when he had a father.) He raised a foot, about to enter his placid reflection, when suddenly, a hand grasped his collar and dragged him back.

He looked behind, expecting Naruto, but saw only Sakura.

“Naruto thinks you’re an idiot,” she said.

Sasuke bared his teeth at her in what could have passed an age and a day ago for a grin. Sakura shut her eyes at the monstrous image, and in that instant, Sasuke spun away from her, twisting out of her slackened grip. He surveyed the water for a brief second before facing Sakura again.

“And you, Sakura? What do you think?”

Strangely, Sakura smiled. “Isn’t it obvious?”

“No,” said Sasuke, suddenly feeling cold and irritable. His voice was almost petulant.

Sakura stepped forward to wrap cautious arms around his wasted body. He shuddered before pressing closer.

“There are two people in this world who love you very much,” she whispered into his bitter ear. “So I think you might as well live.”
