During the first few days of Mokuren's return to Nirvana, her father and mother were always right behind her, shadows falling across her own. (The hardest thing was not to sneak a look over her shoulder, shadows being easily dispersed by the wind, or the filmiest curtain of tears.) They sang with her, her father's hand light on the top of her head, they pointed out plants to her in voices low and unclear; they sat by her bed as she wished for a warm hand to slip hers into.

A week after her return, she walked up to a bush of roses and looked down at the unfolding petals. "They're going to be perfect flowers soon," she said. "By then I'm going to sing for them and make them not just perfect but outstanding. And it's going to be a nice, slow, polite song, too."

When you stopped bringing up memories of someone, people might slowly start to forget. Mokuren thought that should be sufficient reward for keeping the shadows where only she could see them.
