They spent the first year of their marriage agonizing over the possibility that natural children were only a dream. Once Katsumi cried and said hers was a secondhand body, a discarded container. Ryou rocked her to sleep, tactfully avoiding any mention that so might his body be.

In the morning he woke up to her shy smile. "That was the second time I did that," she said. "You told me everything's going to be all right, both times. A very predictable pair, aren't we?"

He tucked her hair behind her ear, faintly remembering that their first kiss had belonged to her. "Don't give up."

"I'm not. Now move over, I have to make breakfast."

After she was officially declared pregnant he steered her away from bookstores, especially the children's fantasy section. She cuffed him on the arm. "What am I, a glass vase?"

"Well, according to the articles I've read, pregnant women are prone to mood swings. I - we - wouldn't want you to burst into tears on seeing Lewis Carroll books on the shelf."

"Don't be silly. I used to love reading them when - well, when I was in America, and I wouldn't mind reading them again." She paused. "I'll read them to her, too."

He squeezed her shoulder gently. He was still coping with how much they now read each other's minds and accept each other's truths.
