---

They didn't give him a shield.

That was the main thing that stuck in Torold's mind as he sent the troll off to Jorund for the little test of strength. He hadn't caught the lad's name; he trained so many young fighters these days that he preferred to wait until they'd passed all three trials and were almost out of his training to learn them. Most of them didn't stand out from one another until then, just so many thirdsons and fourthsons with only the clothes on their back to their name. They earned money in their training and found armor to go with the practice weapons he handed out, lost their shyness or bravado under the stain of sjora blood.

But this troll was different. He'd come up with a full set of fine armor, thick-padded and well-fitting, and a pair of swords. The armor made Torold think fondly of his brother, a fine smith up in Haggerfel. It was new stuff, maybe just worn from the troll's front door to the portal and through Aegirhamn to him. Undyed and made of simple materials - that wasn't the armor for a great warrior, just for a trainee.

It was a good choice, though, and spoke of money spent without regard to the cost.

He wore one sword at his hip and it was barely longer than his forearm. He wore a greatsword across his back. Both blades were made of bronze and were thinner than new swords ought to be. So, old swords but kept in good condition. They didn't have the air of casual neglect that family heirlooms did. Working swords, and the lad had some knowledge of their use from the comfortable way he wore them.

But whoever had outfitted him hadn't given him a shield. Torold didn't know what to make of that oversight, so he hadn't made any comments at all when he gave the troll a small rowan one.

What kind of providers didn't give a young fighter a shield when he went out in the world?

Torold rarely made bets, even with himself, but he would bet a cow that lad would wind up in a heap of trouble one day. Odin watch over him, maybe he'd even make it back out.
