[August 4] [Forever Knight] Eternal City
Title: Eternal City
Day/Theme: August 4th/She left her life on Monday
Series: Forever Knight
Character: Janette
Rating: G
The hotel had served her well for the past five years. True, the view wasn't much since she'd had the windows blacked out (eccentric artists, the help murmured), but the impeccable decor and discreet help had been precisely to her taste. Richly appointed, home to the elite of the elite. Janette always had liked her comforts. But she could find a new place to live.
She had rather enjoyed her attempt at fashion design. She'd found she preferred viewing art - or wearing it - to creating it, but nevertheless, it was always fun to try something new. Kept life interesting. The business attempt had not been a complete failure. Not a rousing success, either, but then, fame was never a good idea anyway. She could find a new career, if she wanted one.
And the people who surrounded her - well. There were always more people, too. The world was full of them, after all.
What Janette would miss, leaving this current life behind, was not the trappings of the life she had constructed; she had after all designed it knowing that it would eventually be discarded. She would miss only one thing: Paris. Rome may hold the name of the eternal city, but she knew the truth. For all the centuries that had gone by, for all the changes to fashion and government and that wretched metal monstrosity by the Seine, Paris was still and always would be her home, the great city of lights even by night, eternally waiting to welcome her back.
It would eventually be safe to return. A half century or more would go by, but Paris would still be Paris, still be here, waiting for her. So it was not so hard to leave her temporary life.
She closed her suitcase, gathered her bags. The sun would soon rise on a Monday morning, and when it did, she had best be below decks of a ship ready to sail.
