[Aug. 18] [Original] Listen Up, Kiddo

Title: Listen Up, Kiddo
Day/Theme: Aug. 18, 2010 "Quarter moon better than none"
Series: Original (The Courier's Tale)
Character/Pairing: Israel, "you" - some neophyte courier
Rating: PG

It's dangerous to travel all by yourself when there's no moon out there lighting the roads, you know. I know, I know. You're not stupid, but I felt it was only fair to properly warn you. Even an experienced courier like myself can run into trouble on a moonless night.

Why? Well, there are lots of reasons. It depends on where you're wandering around, I guess. Down near the border with the Ghirans, you might run into wandering shepherds and goatherds with their flocks, which aren't dangerous, but you can also encounter wolves going after those same animals or poachers. If you're really unlucky, there can be encounters with dangerous types- the scouts of warlords slumming across the border to check up on the non-existent security out there to see what the chances of another successful invasion are.

And that's just near that vague southern border of ours. If you're near the Silesian border, you might run into Inquisitors. If you have the proper papers you'll be fine even on the Silesian side. If you don't...well, you'd better make sure you're only carrying legal items or hop back into Catalonia as fast you can. They're probably not looking after you anyway. They're probably chasing down some Silesian heretic or no-gooder from their home. But, well, they're Inquisitors. They won't hesitate to take you in too if you cause them kind of trouble.

Yeah, yeah, I see you giving me that look. "Oh, Israel, it's just the border regions where the night is dangerous," you're saying to me. Well, that's naive! It can be tough to travel in any open part of Catalonia at night without a moon to protect you. And then there're the cities and they have a bunch of things all their own for you to watch out for. Don't get cocky, kid. Take it from me. I'm trying to save you some possible difficulties in the future! Seriously!

...Fine. Walk away. Be like that. There's still a sliver in the sky tonight. I guess you'll be okay, one way or another. I guess.

No one ever takes me seriously anymore.
