[Sept 10] [Watchmen] Crumbling Away
Title: Crumbling Away
Day/Theme: 10) grow up and blow away
Series: Watchmen
Character/Pairing: Dan/Nite Owl II
Rating: PG
He didn’t believe anymore. His mentor and his partner had both been destroyed right under his nose. A whole system of belief, that people were basically human, had been wiped out. There weren’t any humans left, just cattle and wolves, both lead around in circles by their noses or their stomachs. He had given some serious thought to which of the two he was.
He knew which he had been, fattened and complacent, trusting in the fences to keep the herd safe. He couldn’t go back to that now. But become a wolf? Join the pack? Keep himself fed off the herd and make the best of it? That really wasn’t an option either.
He could escape, just fly away, but where to? He wasn’t young anymore. Life was no longer an adventure. The world could not be made a better place. He had seen the futility of that. It could be borne, endured, for awhile. Eventually, you were betrayed by something, and either killed or ruined.
Adrian had told him to grow up, and in a way, he had. Like a dandelion, he had matured and aged until all that was left was a brittle shell that a breeze could send shattering. Maybe the little seeds of his life would sprout somewhere else, in other heroes, in another time, but not here. Not anymore.
