[July 14][Original] Miniature Eternities

Title: Miniature Eternities
Day/Theme: July 14, 2009 "forever was so many different things"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Ilekano, L'zark, Bashir
Rating: G

"And then there's the matter of appointing a new high priest of ceremonies..." First Councilor L'zark muttered, flipping through the pages of his clipboard as he stumbled along at the side of the pacing emperor.

Ilekano moved at a quick clip even when he had no real destination awaiting him. His pacing took him from one corner of the long audience chamber to the other. His pace was so steady it could've been used as a unit of measurement. When he spun around at the edge of the room, he lost L'zark for a few steps until his advisor caught back up to his pounding speed. "That's right," Ilekano agreed.

Bashir sat politely on the steps watching this whirlwind of decisive thinking. His stepfather's incessant movement was making him not only anxious, but slightly dizzy as well. He was like a child's top that never lost its spin.

"Bashir, do you have anything to add?" Ilekano asked, his voice rough and gravelly as ever. Some said he sounded like a wolf might, if wolves could speak.

"I have a suggestion," he offered, trying not to sound overly spineless and meek. Ilekano hated it when he mumbled too softly or stumbled over his words. Any man who expected to be heard by the older emperor had to be sufficiently easy for him to understand.

"Let's hear it," came the firm command. It was not for nothing that the first and second councilors to Ilekano were called the first and second opinions. He was well-known for making his own decisions and then soliciting the advice of others just to see how many of the relevant people agreed with him. In a world where he was the supreme authority on everything, Bashir's opinion was as good to him as L'zark's.

"I'd recommend Urbahn Kyl Canto."

"That scholar-monk who came around to plead Tofura's case? He was quite eloquent." Ilekano stroked his short beard. He hadn't considered that possibility. Urbahn had moved on to his brother's court per Tiokihawa's request and was currently tied up with the minor matter of entertaining the lower court with lectures and ceremonies. High priest of ceremonies was a post that was held for that most human of forevers- life. Thus, it was important for Ilekano to appoint someone he expected to do a good job and not annoy him to avoid any further embarrassments.

"He's a good man," Bashir said. It wasn't much of an argument, but he wasn't a very persuasive speaker anyway. If he tried to say more, he was likely to find himself getting twisted and tangled up in his own words- his self-made torture- until Ilekano freed him with a sharp word, like "Silence!"
