After the initial elation of being discharged, and sending the equally joyful Buhui out, Third Aunt had Ji Xiaofu sit next to her. She asked Xiaofu if she would ever bring her daughter to see the man who was supposed to have met the girl a long time ago. Xiaofu's immediate reply seemed to upset, but not startle, her.

"He will want both of us to live with him," Xiaofu said, rising to her feet. "And I don't want to see him again. Now please help me pack my things, Aunt." The older woman hesitated, and Xiaofu added softly, "Buhui and I have to be far away from this house before my teacher gets here."

"One day your teacher won't be looking for you anymore."

I'd like you to be the fourth leader of Emei. "It's not going to happen in a hurry."

Third Aunt made a high, mournful sound. "Please think of Buhui. Think of her future. She needs a safe, permanent home."

But this decision is not made out of vanity, Xiaofu wanted to say, striding into the room and began picking up her daughter's toys off the floor. It is not even about fear. He will never forget me - and a memory, an echo he will always see in his daughter, is what I want to remain. It is how I love him, and her.
