[September 1; Doctor Who] Trigger
Title: Trigger
Day/Theme: September 1 - here we are
Series: Doctor Who
Character/Pairing: Fourth Doctor, Orin (original character)
Rating: G
"Orin, come and have a look at this! I think it's something you'd love to see."
She sighs, annoyed at the interruption of her reading. He always seems to find the most inopportune times to want to show her things. Orin sets her book aside and joins the Doctor at the console with an exaggerated sigh for effect.
"Well? What's so important?" She doesn't mean to snap at him, but when he fails to take notice of her tone she says nothing further.
"Just look outside," he says, his trademark grin playing across his face. Clearly he's excited to show her whatever it is he's found.
Orin favours him with a vaguely sour expression and moves to open the doors. What lies before her stuns her into total silence. Despite the knowledge of the TARDIS' capabilities, that her homeland is stretched out before her untouched by the Daleks seems impossible.
Orin hears the Doctor move to stand beside her. He's babbling about something, but she can't be bothered to care. He drapes his arm around her shoulders as he always does and something inside her snaps. She turns suddenly, pulling away from him, and shoves the Doctor into the interior wall of the TARDIS.
"Why?!" she shrieks, pain and rage merging so that even she has no idea just what she feels. "Why would you do this?!"
His eyes are wide with surprise and perhaps even fear. "Orin, I thought--"
"Why would you think I'd want this?" She's nearly in tears now with her emotions spiking on so many wavelengths: rage, pain, gratitude, love, despair.
"Just calm down, Orin. I'm sorry," he says, his tone soft and plaintive. He tries not to flinch as Orin slams her fists into his chest. He clearly remembers the last time she had been upset like this.
"I cannot ever return!" she cries. "Why would you do this?"
"Orin, I'm--"
"Stop saying you're sorry and tell me why! You have no idea how hard it was to put the death of that place behind me." She stares at him angrily, gold eyes narrowed.
"I thought perhaps you would have liked to see your home again," he says quietly. "The TARDIS was being cooperative, and I just thought--"
"But you didn't think! You don't call anywhere home except this ship; you can't understand that there are places you can't go back to once they're gone," Orin says, her voice icy and cold. "I cannot go back there. I had accepted that."
"I'm so--"
"This is the here and now, not whatever ghosts lie out there. This is where we are. Here. Not Radigast VII, not Skaro, not Gallifrey. Here."
"Orin, please--"
"Don't." She's calmed down, her former rage dwindling into a familiar pit of despair. "Just don't. I have to be alone. Don't come looking for me. I'll find you when I'm ready."
Orin stalks out of the console room, slamming the door behind her. She sinks down to her knees, closing her eyes as she wishes her tears away. She hears the Doctor sigh from the other side of the door.
"I didn't mean to hurt you... I just thought you'd like to see your home again..."
She knows he's talking to himself more than anything else. She also knows that he didn't truly mean to hurt her, but he so rarely thinks his actions through... And he almost never considers that his mindset is much different than hers when it comes to things like this.
Orin pulls herself up and flees into the maze-like corridors to recover herself before the Doctor inevitably decides to try and find her. She needs to be on her own for a little while. Perhaps Sarah Jane's journal is still in the library; that might give her some insight into the Doctor's reasoning.
