Euphemia’s voice is strong and firm when she declares Kururugi her knight. In her eyes there is a hint of steel that marks her for the Emperor’s daughter (and you think of the flash of light on metal, blood and a death come far too soon).

 

There’s no room for argument in her voice and Cornelia mutely nods in agreement, not trusting herself to speak past the lump in her throat. Euphemia turns and walks out. (you realize that you don't remember when have her shoulders straightened underneath the weight of her station) but Cornelia can only remember of summer days and the sweetness of rose gardens.

 

She can almost hear the sound of her heart breaking.
