"Prepared for your game?"
Shindou looked up from where he was scanning the shelves--and hoping against hope to find a copy of Jump! squeezed between the Go books--and saw that it was Waya, who stood out in the Go Institute bookshop due to his usual green-and-blue camouflage shirts. "Huh?" he said in confusion before he replayed Waya's question in his mind. "Oh. Yeah."
Waya shook his head as he approached. "Are you sure you're ready to play an official game, Shindou? You look distracted."
"I-" Shindou tried for a chuckle, but stopped when Waya's scowl grew. "I will be," he said, doing his best to sound sober rather than amused. Waya had never stopped berating Shindou for what he considered to be Shindou's careless attitude towards the responsibilities of a pro. Between his grumbling and Touya's own seriousness, Shindou was trying to be more dignified these days. "Don't worry."
"Che! I'm not worried," Waya said, then scowled. "But this is a game with Ogata, Shindou." He nodded towards the exit, and both of them walked out towards the lift lobby. "Ogata has three titles. You can't underestimate him."
Shindou nodded. "I know, Waya," he said. He considered it an achievement that he had not rolled his eyes even once. "You're coming to see the game, right?"
Waya rolled his eyes. "I wasn't going to, but then I heard that Touya isn't here."
"Not his fault," Shindou defended Touya, "Touya has a game too, in Nagasaki."
"I know, Shindou," Waya said, dragging out Shindou's name in a groan, as though to punctuate his annoyance. "I read Go Weekly too. I just thought you might like to see a familiar face in the audience. Or is the great Shindou Hikaru only interested in the support of his boyfriend?"
Shindou mock-punched him on the shoulder. "Bastard," he said, before he turned up his nose in a haughty expression that--luckily, Waya didn't know--was copied from Touya. "I accept support from all, even when it comes from someone wearing jungle-green and blue."
"There is no blue in the jungle, and you're one to talk, when you date someone with the fashion sense of a three-year-old."
"And cargo pants." Shindou glared. "Touya does not have the fashion sense of a three-year-old!"
Waya snorted. "Yeah, it must be true love," he said into the air.
Shindou was about to retort when the lift door opened, revealing Ogata, who was wiping his glasses with a handkerchief. "Ogata!" he exclaimed, and at Waya's scandalised look, corrected that to, "Er, I mean, Ogata-sensei. Good afternoon." He got into the lift, dragging Waya in with him.
"Good afternoon, Ogata-sensei," Waya said with a bow.
The lift door closed. "You're early, Shindou. Even for an offical game," Ogata said, replacing his glasses.
"And you're late," Shindou retorted.
"Shindou!" Waya said, sotto voce.
"Don't you usually come two hours in advance? It's now thirty minutes before the official starting time."
"I was unavoidably detained by a flight delay," Ogata said. "I apologise if this caused difficulty on your side." He was starting to sound intimidatingly formal.
"Oh?" Shindou could sound lofty and disdainful--again, a skill he learnt from Touya--when he felt like it, and he did right then. The lift door opened at the eighth floor, and Shindou walked out, not looking at Ogata. But out of the corner of his eye, Shindou could see Waya and Ogata exit the lift.
"Ogata-sensei, were you travelling?" Waya was asking, trailing the older pro awkwardly.
"Yes, I've been in Taipei for nearly two weeks." Ogata's tone suggested that he had something important to do there, and it was not something Waya would understand.
Obviously discomfited, Waya blurted, "Then you don't know about the stolen gobans-"
"What stolen gobans?" Ogata asked
"Er, Touya-sensei's goban was stolen, and so was Shindou's-"
Shindou stopped walking and turned around. "Waya!" he said. "That can wait. He wasn't here when all of that happened, anyway." He stared at Ogata, challenge in his eyes. "Are you ready?"
Ogata returned his look. "Of course."
They were met by the game officials and half-a-dozen other pros who had come to watch the game. It was clear, from their earnest bows of support to Ogata, who they supported. Then again, Ogata held three titles; it was no wonder all attention gravitated to him.
Everyone became quiet after the officials announced the start of the game. As Shindou and Ogata bowed to each other, Waya tugged at his shirt awkwardly, remembered Shindou's teasing about the colours on it, and smiled in encouragement.
