i. when she made him laugh
“I’m not kidding,” Kayl shouted, obviously frustrated by the man sitting beside her but she couldn’t properly suppress the smile on her face. “I’m serious. If you don’t like it, just quit.”

Raz continued to chuckle lightly and turned to the girl sitting next to him with a small smile on his face. “You’re such a simple human girl,” he chuckled again when she crossed her arms across her chest in mock offense. “Things don’t work that easily here.”

“Well I think they should. You should be free to do whatever you want to do!”

The dragon chuckled again causing Kayl to fix him with a glare. Her expression softened as he continued to chuckle at her comments. “You know,” she said while she turned her light glare into a smile. “You have a very nice laugh.”

Raz’s laughter stopped immediately as he stared at the girl sitting next to him; he began to cover his mouth to stop its quivering. He could feel something in his stomach beckoning him to close the distance between the two of them but Raz chose to ignore it by diverting his eyes away from Kayl’s face.

Kayl tilted her head in concern and confusion and she closed the distance between the two of them; this only made the feeling in his stomach all the worse. “What is it? Is there something wrong?”

He shook his head vehemently and let out a breath he had no idea he had been holding when she shrugged lightly in disappointment and increased the space between them.

ii. when he caught her
“It’s dangerous up there. Get down before you hurt yourself.”

Kayl ignored him and continued to walk across the thin top of the wall between his mansion and the forest surrounding them; she hummed a soft tune as she did so. Raz ran a gloved hand through his hair in slight irritation and instead of continuing to protest, he monitored her quietly. Catching sight of this, Kayl stopped and directed an expression of curiosity towards him.

“If you’re not going to do anything, you should come join me. I think it’s pretty fun.” To demonstrate, she took a few steps forward and a few steps back and shot him a grin.

He frowned at her and narrowed his eyes in disapproval; her steps were timid and hesitant now instead of defiant and large. “Come down from there on your own or I’ll come and take you down myself.”

Kayl steadied herself quickly and shook her head in disagreement and continued to walk until she came to the end of the wall; Raz’s gaze never left her figure for a moment. Sighing, she tried to turn back around but her foot missed the stone and she began to lose her balance.

When she fell, he was there in a heartbeat. His arms wrapped around her legs and supported her back so that she wouldn’t hit the ground; her arms instinctively found their way around his neck and this brought them closer together. He could feel her quick breathing and shallow breaths and it bothered him; he didn’t dare to look at her face so he wouldn’t see her flushed face and her mouth alternating between being open and closed.

He let her out of his arms as soon as she thanked him for catching her; it was an action he regretted and felt relieved to do.

iii. when she got a haircut
She took off her maid’s hat and her hair fell out from the inside around her shoulders. Kayl smiled shyly as the two young dragons examined her.

“Medea cut it for me. How is it?”

Her hair was much shorter than before; the first cut came against her will by her two kidnappers, reducing it to an uneven pattern ranging from the middle of her forearms to the small of her back. The second cut came from Medea, who kindly teased the girl when she joked about keeping her hair the way it was.

“Looking pretty cute Little Lady,” Driel chuckled as he placed his chin in his hand and glanced at his twin for his answer. Kayl smiled brightly at Driel and tilted her head towards Raz, waiting for his approval. The way her hair curled now was so different from how straight it used to be. It made her look a bit older than before and a little more stunning which caught Raz off guard.

“It. You. You look great.”

Raz tried his best to ignore his brother’s light snickering as he blushed and gulped nervously when Kayl shot him a radiant beam.

iv. when she touched his wings
“Does it hurt?”

Her hands were cool and gentle as she caressed his scale-filled wings with child-like curiosity. “You’re fine,” he assured, trying his best to keep the trembling out of his voice; her hands were driving him to the brink of insanity.

“I don’t mean that,” she responded, moving her hand to the top tip of his wing; when she couldn’t reach it fully, she laid a hand on his shoulder and stood on the tips of her toes to touch it. Satisfied, she came back down and bit her lip. “When you grow horns from your head, scales on your body, and these from your back,” she gave his wings an amiable tug and grimaced slightly when he shuddered (she thought it was from pain not pleasure), “does it hurt?”

“It depends on the situation,” Raz answered quietly but clearly even though his mind was still reeling from her touches.

“Then... did it hurt when you were fighting those two?” Kayl questioned as she stepped out in front of him, her eyes downcast while she played with the hair that escaped from her ponytail.

When he gave her a verbal affirmation, she glanced into his red eyes and bit her lip. Tentatively, she reached for one of his scaled hands and held it in her smaller ones; Raz cursed his heightened sensitivity to touch while his dragon features were out in the open.

“I’m sorry,” she murmured quietly and slowly, she pressed a soft kiss to his scarlet scaled knuckles, causing him to suck in a sharp breath.

v. when she gave him her ribbon
Her body was trembling fiercely and her bangs were hiding her eyes from his view. He took a step closer and restrained himself from faltering when her hand shot out; her fist was tightly closed around her pale lavender hair ribbon. She didn’t dare look at him while she spoke.

“I want you,” her voice cracked dangerously and she bit her lip to bring herself under control. “I want you to take this with you. I... I want you to remember that I’m always with you in whatever you do. You just,” she paused and loosened her grip on the ribbon and ran her thumb over the material. “Have to give it back when all of this is over with.”

He noticed that her body was trembling less now than before but he made no movement to reach for the thin object in her hand. All he could say to fill in the silence was her name.

Letting out a cry of frustration, Kayl lunged forward, took his sword from its sheath, and began to wrap her ribbon around the hilt of the sword. He made no motion to stop any of her actions; he was caught off guard once again by the look in her eyes.

They were partly glazed over with water but he could see the mixture of emotions behind them: fear for what would happen to all of them, frustration at his inability to accept her offering, and grief for her future departure from all of them. She masked this with a determined smile when she finished wrapping the sword’s hilt; she handed it back to him carefully and watched him carefully, her hands behind her back and her body leaning forward slightly.

His hand repeatedly opened and closed around the hilt of his sword, making sure that the ribbon didn’t interfere with is ability to handle his weapon. He couldn’t help but smile widely at her gesture; he knew that somehow, this was her way of saying that she wanted to fight by his side. He sheathed his sword and gave a shoulder a gentle squeeze while smiling.

“Thank you,” he chuckled as her originally stiff posture began to relax. “It actually feels a bit stronger now.”

He heard her hiccup while her body began to tremble again and then her tears began to flow against a smile and choked sobs of ‘idiot’ reached his ears but he continued to smile when she clung to his shirt and buried her head in his chest. He held her tight and ran his hand up and down her hair gently as he laid his chin on her head; he didn’t want to do anything more because he feared an increase in her tears.
