[Dec. 15, 2007][Original] Irene in the City
Title: Irene in the City
Day/Theme: Dec. 15, 2007 "Swimming backwards, with your eyes closed"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Irene, Levesque, and Beltran
Rating: G
"The buildings are so big!" Irene gasped, taking her last few steps out of the forest.
Levesque emerged out of the trees a few steps behind her, gazing fondly at the capital's spires, walls, and towers. The eerie beauty of the wild lands was unmistakable, but he had a weak spot in his homebody heart for the comforts of civilization. Beltran was at least somewhat more suited for the outdoor life.
"Where does my sister live?" Irene asked, eyes wide and mouth agape. She stood on her tiptoes to better take in the immense and foreign scenery laid before her. She had never seen one castle, let along the six that marked the boundaries of the city. The carefully fitted stone walls, shimmering glass, and gem-like colors on the fancier roofs seemed like something from one of her mother's stories. This was truly an alien world before her.
"That blue and brown monstrosity back to the left," Beltran answered, pointing over most of the city to the most elaborately curved building in sight.
Irene could barely tell where one palace ended and another began. These stone giants were little like the sod houses and wooden huts of the forest. As the two clerics led their apprehensive charge down the rolling hills of green grass to the cobblestone streets, Irene constantly glanced back over her shoulder at the slowly receding forest. She had a nervous, panicky feeling that this was a final parting from the land of her youth. If she did not dart back now to the safety of the trees, she might never see the wilderness again.
Levesque gently held her back with an arm kept loosely around her shoulders. Perhaps he could sense her reaction to this new atmosphere, or perhaps he was simply doing it for no reason in particular, but the young woman knew it was the only thing holding her back.
There were lots of people in the city, more than she had ever seen at one time. The long-haired girl thought they must be staring at her as she passed, but in truth she received only vague glances, the cityfolk not recognizing the stranger in their midst. Aside from her nearly unblinking gaze as she looked about wildly, unable to take in even half the sights surrounding her, Irene looked no different from the people walking past her down the street. Of course, looks mattered little when one felt so entirely out of place.
