[Sept. 24, 2007][Avatar] Rough Meal
Title: Rough Meal
Day/Theme: Sept. 24, 2007 "The sudden wave of silver born in you"
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: Kuei, Hua, Bosco
Rating: G
Hua had Kuei sit on the floor at a low table while she heated some watery rice gruel over the stove. Bosco romped as wildly as he could around the tiny house, frightening the chief's squirrelcat. Kuei was surprised as how plain the dwelling was, with woven mats covering the floor and what looked to be only three or four rooms. He wondered if there were people living like this not only in his kingdom, but in Ba Sing Se as well.
"The Fire Nation has made things so hard," he realized sadly. He had learned this from the Avatar and partially even experienced it himself, but the situation in the countryside hadn't been real to him until now.
Hua handed him a chipped bowl of the rice gruel topped with several thin slices of cucumber. Kuei was a little confused that she hadn't given him a spoon, or at least some chopsticks to pick up the cucumber with. He stared awkwardly into the bowl.
"Oh, ah, sorry!" Hua apologize, rushing to bring the traveler some rough wooden chopsticks.
Kuei took them as gratefully as he had accepted the food, glad not to be forced to eat without any utensils. He wolfed down the meal while Hua watched thoughtfully. A tea kettle whistled and she rose to bring back a steaming cup.
"Is there anything I can get Bosco?" she inquired.
"Well," Kuei considered the question, savoring the taste of the green tea, which was far superior to the food. He was too hungry and thankful to complain. "He likes fish, honey, and any kind of meat, really."
"I'll see what I can do," the simply dressed girl agreed, heading back into the kitchen that branched off the room with the table. Kuei could hear her moving dishes around as she called back in to him conversationally, "So where'd you come from, Kuei?"
"Ba Sing Se," he answered truthfully.
"Wow!" she marveled, "That's a long way from here! You must be somebody special to have been in Ba Sing Se!"
Appa had obviously flown them some distance from the city since the king was aware that he had not walked or rode especially far. "Don't tell anyone," he teased back enticingly, "But I'm traveling incognito!"
"What?" she squawked, poking her head back in to examine him again for some type of indication of hidden high status. The peasant girl saw nothing fine or grand about him, except perhaps for the way he held up his head so nobly despite his sorry state. This Kuei was probably just using her imagination against her. ...Still, one did not expect a man who came into town riding a bear to be entirely normal...
