September 17: Spirited Away. 'Close Enough'
Title: Close Enough
Day/Theme: September 17: You bring out the sunshine underground

Firelight wasn’t the same as sunlight. Down in the boiler room, there was light and warmth a-plenty, but it wasn’t the same. Close enough, maybe, but nowhere near the same.
He didn’t need much to get by. He wasn’t young anymore. It was good to have a task, a roof over his head, and a meal a day. The soot sprites kept him company and gave him someone to lord over when he was feeling put upon.
He also had Lin. The bathhouse girls used to take turns bringing his meal down. When Lin’s turn had come around, she had stayed to watch him eat and ask him questions. Why did he have four arms? Had Yubaba given him the extra arms when he came to work there? Where did he learn the soot sprite magic? And on and on.
After that, she had brought him food every day, along with different things for the soot sprites until she had found something they liked. It had gone on for years. They were just rude enough to each other that neither had to wonder what the other was feeling.
It had crossed his mind a few times that he could invite her to stay. He had also considered inviting her to leave. To give her one of the train tickets and let them go together. He didn’t have anywhere to go, was the only problem. And he hadn’t given one to Lin simply because he didn’t want her to leave without him. Maybe this was as close as they would ever be anyway.
So Kamajii went about his work, as usual, and waited for the daily visit that was warm and bright even out of the fire’s reach.
