He hadn’t really been surprised.

As a boy, Will had noticed the worry around his mother’s eyes when his father went away. It was a worry she accepted and was resigned too, but he had noticed. There were so many things that could happen to a man on the sea. Storms, sharks, sickness, starvation, foreign fevers, pirates, mutinies, monsters, even honest accidents…

So when no word came for weeks and months, the worry bled quietly into grief. The grief had been handled with the same acceptance and resignation the worry had been. A year passed, then two, and there was nothing else to believe except that Bill was dead.

Then, Will learned what had really happened. And in the back of his mind found the thought that his father could still be alive. If he was cursed, Bill could’ve just slogged his way back to land on the ocean’s bottom. It wasn’t exactly hope. Will had gone so long without his father, and then had the image of the man so skewed, he wasn’t sure he wanted Bill back.

Later still, he had met his father and learned there were worse things than dying and there were worse things than curses.
